The Story Behind the Name

Named in honour of the HMS Edinburgh, a Royal Navy cruiser that sank in 1942 while carrying Soviet gold intended to pay for wartime supplies. The ship lay undisturbed for nearly four decades in the icy depths of the Barents Sea, until a daring deep-sea salvage operation in 1981 recovered over 400 bars of gold. It’s a remarkable tale of perseverance and reward — much like the beer itself.

Edinburgh has one of the longest brewing histories in Britain. For centuries the city was packed with breweries, maltings and enough beer production to help earn the nickname Auld Reekie. Stewart Brewing arrived much later, but became one of the breweries responsible for bringing independent brewing back into the conversation.

Founded by Steve and Jo Stewart in 2004, the brewery began with a small setup and gradually grew into one of Scotland’s most recognisable independent craft breweries. Based in Loanhead on the outskirts of Edinburgh, it still retains a strong connection to the local beer scene despite its growth.

The range covers everything from crisp lagers and session beers through to modern IPAs and seasonal releases. Edinburgh Gold remains one of the best-known beers, combining soft malt character with gentle hop bitterness in a way that feels very Scottish without becoming old-fashioned. Jack Back and Pentland IPA helped introduce plenty of local drinkers to more hop-forward styles.

What makes Stewart particularly easy to recommend is consistency. The brewery has always balanced accessibility with quality, producing beers that work equally well for dedicated beer enthusiasts and people who simply want a good pint after work.

The brewery taproom and pizza kitchen have become destinations in their own right, which feels entirely appropriate. Beer generally performs best when surrounded by food and conversation.
