Takamaka

Style: Distillery

Country: Seychelles

Region: Mahé

Most rum-producing islands have centuries of distilling history behind them. Takamaka took a different route and built a national rum identity almost from scratch.

Founded in the Seychelles by brothers Richard and Bernard d’Offay, Takamaka began in 2002 with the idea of creating a rum that genuinely reflected the islands rather than simply copying Caribbean styles. Production takes place at La Plaine St André on Mahé, where the distillery works with molasses-based rum alongside local ageing and blending.

The range moves from bright, easy-drinking white and dark rums through to more serious aged bottlings in the St André Series. Tropical maturation plays a huge role here. Warm island conditions accelerate ageing, helping build layers of vanilla, spice, dried fruit and oak relatively quickly while still retaining freshness.

What makes Takamaka particularly interesting is that the rum actually feels connected to its location. Seychelles remains a small player compared with the Caribbean giants, but the distillery has leaned into that identity rather than trying to disguise it.

Rum increasingly feels at its best when producers embrace where they come from. Takamaka has built its entire reputation around exactly that idea.
