Tegernseer's take on the classic German Pils is a little more characterful than you might expect. Brewed with crystal-clear mountain spring water, pale barley malt and carefully selected Tettnang aroma hops, it's crisp and refreshing but has a surprisingly robust malt backbone. At 5%, there's enough weight to balance the bitterness without losing that light, clean Pilsner feel.

Bavaria contains enough historic breweries to make beer history feel like a local hobby. Tegernseer still manages to stand out.

Located beside Lake Tegernsee in southern Bavaria, the brewery traces its roots back to a former Benedictine monastery and has become one of Germany’s most respected lager producers. Among lager enthusiasts, the name inspires the sort of loyalty normally reserved for football clubs and family recipes.

The flagship Helles is the beer most people associate with the brewery. Soft bready malt, delicate floral hops and remarkable balance all arrive with the sort of precision that makes good lager look deceptively easy. Which it absolutely is not.

There is a freshness and drinkability to the beers that feels very Bavarian. Nothing shouts for attention. Everything is carefully placed. The result is beer that disappears from the glass faster than expected while discussions about brewing tradition become increasingly enthusiastic.

Tegernsee itself is one of the most beautiful corners of Bavaria, and the brewery feels deeply tied to that setting. Crisp lager beside an Alpine lake remains one of Germany’s stronger arguments.
