Cognac can sometimes disappear beneath layers of luxury marketing and polished wood-panelled seriousness. Maxime Trijol feels much more like a working distillery first and a prestige brand second, which is usually a good sign.

The family estate sits in Saint-Martial-sur-Né in the Grande Champagne region and has been distilling Cognac for generations. Unlike many houses, Trijol handle both grape growing and distillation themselves, giving the range a more hands-on, estate-driven identity.

Ugni Blanc forms the backbone of the spirits, distilled in traditional Charentais pot stills before long ageing in French oak. The style leans elegant and aromatic rather than excessively woody. Younger Cognacs show citrus, white flowers and fresh grape character, while older bottlings move into dried fruit, tobacco, nuts and spice without becoming overly sweet.

Grande Champagne deserves much of the credit here too. Chalk-heavy soils produce eaux-de-vie with remarkable finesse and ageing potential, which is why the region sits at the top of Cognac’s classification system.
