Windhoek

Style: Brewery

Country: Namibia

Region: Windhoek

Namibia is one of the driest countries on earth. It probably makes sense that it takes beer fairly seriously.

Windhoek has been brewed since the early twentieth century and remains the flagship beer of Namibia Breweries. While countless lagers rely on lengthy ingredient lists and marketing departments working overtime, Windhoek keeps things remarkably simple. Malted barley, hops and water. Nothing else. The brewery still follows the German Reinheitsgebot purity law, a legacy of the country’s historical links with Germany.

The lager itself is crisp, clean and refreshing, with gentle bitterness and a noticeably dry finish. Windhoek Draught adds a slightly softer, smoother profile while retaining the same straightforward drinkability.

Part of the beer’s identity comes from place. Namibia’s climate, outdoor culture and long-distance road trips all seem somehow connected to the experience of drinking a cold Windhoek. It feels like a beer built around refreshment rather than complexity, which is often exactly the correct decision.

There are more fashionable lagers available. Windhoek has never seemed especially concerned about that.
