This brew pours midnight-black with a velvety tan head. Aromas of dark chocolate, toasted marshmallow and roasted peanuts rise gently, wrapped in soft lactose sweetness. Aging on charred American oak lends notes of vanilla, caramel and a touch of smoke, like a campfire beginning to glow.
On the palate, it’s creamy, nutty and gloriously indulgent, layering cocoa richness with toasted oak spice. The finish lingers smooth and mellow, swaggering off into the night with a wink — because maybe, just maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me from ordinary stouts.

Brew York feels exactly like York itself: historic underneath, slightly eccentric and surprisingly good at encouraging poor life decisions after “just one more.” Founded in 2016 by friends Wayne Smith and Lee Grabham, the brewery quickly became a major name in UK craft beer thanks to creative modern styles, brilliantly daft beer names and a taproom that has consumed countless weekends with alarming efficiency.

The beers swing confidently between juicy IPAs, pastry stouts, fruited sours and crisp lagers, often carrying a playful experimental streak without losing basic drinkability. Brew York has always understood that modern craft beer should still fundamentally be enjoyable to drink rather than feeling like homework disguised as a beverage. Even the more dessert-inspired beers usually stay surprisingly balanced underneath all the marshmallow, chocolate and tropical fruit chaos.

Their most famous releases often come with brilliantly ridiculous names too. Tonkoko became a cult favourite by combining coconut, tonka and chocolate into something dangerously smooth, while the Juice Forsyth series continues the very noble British brewing tradition of terrible puns attached to excellent beer.

What gives Brew York its staying power is that the brewery never feels cynical about any of it. The beers are inventive and modern, but there’s genuine warmth and enthusiasm behind the whole project rather than pure trend-chasing. It feels like beer made by people who still genuinely love pubs, festivals and getting excited about new flavours. Which honestly goes a long way.
