Château Yvonne La Folie 2023 is an organic Loire red from the Saumur-Champigny AOC, made from 100 % Cabernet Franc grown on clay-limestone soils in the vineyards of Champigny-sur-Loire and surrounding parcels. The fruit is hand-harvested, naturally fermented with indigenous yeasts in 50 hl concrete vats, and aged for about 12 months in a combination of older foudres and seasoned barriques before bottling unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulphur.

In the glass it shows a clear ruby-red colour with purple highlights and a pretty, fresh nose of raspberry, cherry, violet and subtle hints of blackcurrant and pepper, all framed by a gently herbaceous Loire character.

Chateau Yvonne

Style: Winery

Country: France

Region: Saumur, Loire Valley

Château Yvonne is one of the Loire Valley’s cult estates and a very strong reminder that Saumur can produce some of France’s most hauntingly elegant wines when handled properly. Organic farming, old vines and minimal intervention all play major roles here, but thankfully the wines never disappear into “natural wine experiment gone slightly wrong” territory.

The estate was revived in the 1990s and now focuses heavily on Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc grown on limestone-rich soils around Saumur. These are varieties perfectly suited to the Loire’s cooler climate, producing wines with freshness, structure and loads of subtle savoury complexity.

The reds are especially beautiful. Cabernet Franc here becomes floral, earthy and refined rather than aggressively green or overly powerful. Red berries, herbs, graphite and soft spice all drift together with silky texture and this brilliant chalky freshness underneath.

The Chenin Blanc wines meanwhile can be absolutely stunning. Waxy, mineral, textured and laser-focused all at once, balancing orchard fruit with acidity sharp enough to keep everything alive for years.

What makes Château Yvonne especially compelling is the purity running through the wines. Nothing feels forced or overworked. The vineyard character comes through incredibly clearly, helped by organic farming and restrained cellar work.

There’s also something deeply Loire about the whole project. Quiet confidence, elegance over excess and wines designed for food, conversation and people paying actual attention while drinking them.

Which, honestly, is usually when wine becomes most interesting anyway.
