More About Domaine Arlaud Bourgogne Chardonnay Scritch

A modern, organic Burgundy Chardonnay from Domaine Arlaud in Morey-Saint-Denis, “Scritch” is part of a newer wave of wines focused on purity, drinkability and a very clear expression of limestone terroir, the name itself referencing the sound of chalk on a blackboard.

In the glass it’s pale lemon with bright, silvery reflections, immediately signalling a fresh, mineral-driven style. The nose is quite precise and slightly restrained at first, opening into white flowers, citrus zest and a light mineral edge, sometimes with a touch of white pepper or subtle spice as it develops.

On the palate it’s tight, linear and very “Burgundy in feel”, built around lemon, green apple and white stone fruit, but the defining feature is the texture, that chalky, saline minerality that runs right through the wine and gives it tension and shape.

There’s a gentle roundness from lees ageing and malolactic fermentation, but it’s very controlled, adding just enough softness to balance the acidity without pushing it into buttery or oaky territory. Everything stays clean, focused and lifted.

Meet the Producer, Domaine Arlaud

Domaine Arlaud

Style: Winery

Burgundy has a reputation for being terrifyingly complicated. Tiny vineyard plots, endless village names, microscopic production numbers and prices capable of causing genuine emotional damage. Domaine Arlaud thankfully reminds people why the region became famous in the first place: beautifully expressive Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that taste absolutely incredible when handled properly.

Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the Arlaud family has been making wine in Burgundy since the 1940s and today the domaine is widely respected for its biodynamic farming and remarkably elegant style. The vineyards cover some seriously prestigious ground too, including sites in Chambolle-Musigny, Gevrey-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche. Casual little lineup really.

The wines themselves lean beautifully pure and detailed. Pinot Noir here is all about red berries, spice, florals, forest floor and silky texture rather than brute force. Even the bigger wines stay remarkably graceful. The whites carry loads of mineral tension and freshness too, avoiding the heavy buttery style that people sometimes wrongly assume all Burgundy tastes like.

What makes Arlaud especially appealing is how alive the wines feel. Biodynamic farming, careful vineyard work and restrained winemaking all combine to let the sites speak clearly without loads of cellar manipulation getting in the way.

And while Burgundy can occasionally drift into slightly exhausting luxury territory, Arlaud wines still feel rooted in actual farming and place rather than pure status-symbol energy.
