Domaine Guillard’s Les Platières 2019 is Gevrey-Chambertin with one foot in tradition and the other in a remarkably good vintage.

The warm, dry conditions of 2019 gave Burgundy wines with both concentration and freshness, and that balance comes through beautifully here. Dark cherry, blackberry, and wild raspberry fruit sit alongside notes of violet, spice, forest floor, and a gentle earthy depth that feels unmistakably Gevrey.

There’s plenty of structure beneath the fruit, but it never feels heavy. Fine tannins and bright acidity keep everything focused, giving the wine energy as well as richness. The result is a Burgundy that already drinks beautifully with a little air, while still having the backbone to age gracefully over the coming years.

This is the sort of wine that reminds you why Gevrey-Chambertin has such a loyal following: generous without excess, complex without showing off, and packed with character from start to finish.

Domaine Guillard is a small family domaine based in Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits, one of Burgundy’s most celebrated areas for Pinot Noir. Founded by Michel Guillard in 1979, the estate focuses on wines from the village and its surrounding vineyards, with a particular emphasis on older vines and the character of individual sites.

The domaine covers around 4.8 hectares, a modest holding in a region where vineyard location can make a remarkable difference to the finished wine. Its vines include some planted by Michel’s grandfather, Auguste Lyonnet, in 1911. These older plantings are particularly valuable in Gevrey-Chambertin, where Pinot Noir can produce wines with depth, structure and a distinctly savoury side.

Pinot Noir is the focus, with the range including village Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes bottlings and several Premier Cru wines. These include Les Corbeaux, Lavaux Saint-Jacques and Poissenot, vineyards known for producing wines with concentration and ageing potential. The domaine’s approach centres on expressing the character of these sites rather than making a broad range of different styles.

Gevrey-Chambertin is known for Pinot Noir that combines red and dark cherry fruit with earthy notes, spice and firm tannins. The wines can be structured and powerful in their youth, gradually developing more savoury, forest-floor and game-like complexity with age. The older vines at Domaine Guillard contribute to this tradition, particularly in its Vieilles Vignes and Premier Cru bottlings.

Domaine Guillard offers a focused look at classic Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, with a small vineyard holding and a range built around the different expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin.
