RAEN Winery was founded in 2013 by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi on the remote western edges of the Sonoma Coast, focusing on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shaped by Pacific influence, coastal fog and organic farming. The name RAEN stands for “Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally”, reflecting the winery’s emphasis on site expression, regenerative farming and lower-intervention winemaking.
As fourth-generation members of the Mondavi family, Carlo and Dante grew up surrounded by California wine culture but deliberately chose to pursue a fresher and more coastal style far removed from the richer Napa Cabernet tradition often associated with the Mondavi name. Their vineyards sit close to the Pacific Ocean, where cool temperatures, long growing seasons and maritime influence help preserve acidity, aromatic lift and mineral tension.
The wines are especially known for lifted aromatics, bright acidity and a more Burgundian sense of structure and restraint. Pinot Noir dominates the range, particularly bottlings such as Royal St. Robert and a series of single-vineyard wines sourced from extreme coastal sites where fog, elevation and ocean influence shape the character of the fruit.
Whole cluster fermentation, organic farming and minimal intervention in the cellar all play important roles in the winemaking approach, helping retain freshness, texture and vineyard identity. The resulting wines often combine red berry fruit, floral aromatics and savoury spice with saline minerality and remarkable elegance for California Pinot Noir.
RAEN has become one of the defining names in modern California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, particularly among drinkers looking for more restrained, terroir-driven and coastal expressions of American wine.
