Aden here, this Pinot blew my mind when I tasted it with the wine maker. It's a big price but trust me it is WORTH IT!

RAEN “Royal St. Robert Cuvée” Pinot Noir is one of the most celebrated modern expressions of California Pinot Noir, produced on the extreme Sonoma Coast by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi. The wine is named in honour of their grandfather and has quickly become a benchmark for cool-climate, Burgundian-inspired Californian Pinot Noir.

Sourced from high-elevation, ocean-influenced vineyards just miles from the Pacific, the wine reflects the intensity and freshness of one of California’s coolest wine-growing regions. The combination of fog, wind and dramatic temperature shifts creates Pinot Noir with natural acidity, lifted aromatics and remarkable finesse.

Vinified using native yeast fermentation and often whole cluster inclusion, Royal St. Robert is crafted in a precise, low-intervention style designed to highlight purity of fruit and coastal terroir.

On the nose, expect an expressive bouquet of rose petals, wild strawberries, red cherry, raspberry and blood orange, layered with forest floor, coastal herbs, tea leaf and subtle spice.

The palate is medium-bodied, finely structured and incredibly elegant, with bright acidity, silky tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Flavours of red berries, citrus peel, cranberry, spice box and savoury coastal notes build complexity without heaviness.

Unlike richer, more extracted New World Pinot Noir, RAEN focuses on tension, freshness and precision, resulting in a wine that feels closer in philosophy to top Burgundy than typical Californian styles.

Best served slightly cool (14–16°C) and ideally given time to open in the glass. It pairs beautifully with duck, roast chicken, mushroom dishes, game birds and elegant vegetarian plates.

A highly allocated, critically acclaimed Pinot Noir that has become one of the defining wines of the Sonoma Coast.

RAEN Sonoma Coast

Style: Winery

Country: USA

Region: Sonoma Coast, California

Some wineries spend years trying to convince people they are making serious Pinot Noir. RAEN arrived with the slightly unfair advantage of being run by Carlo and Dante Mondavi, then backed it up by making genuinely excellent wine.

The name stands for Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally, which sounds mildly academic until you taste the wines and realise the focus is really on vineyard sites and the Sonoma Coast itself. The project centres around cool, windswept coastal vineyards where Pinot Noir develops slowly and retains remarkable freshness.

The wines lean firmly towards elegance rather than power. Expect red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, forest floor and bright acidity rather than dense extraction or heavy oak. There is often a lifted, almost Burgundian feel to the best bottles, although the Pacific influence keeps them unmistakably Californian.

One of the strengths of RAEN is how clearly the vineyard sites come through. Different bottlings show subtle shifts in fruit, structure and minerality depending on their position along the rugged coastline.

California Pinot Noir can sometimes drift towards richness for richness’ sake. RAEN largely avoids that trap, focusing instead on tension, freshness and length. The result feels remarkably refined without losing the generosity that makes Sonoma Coast wine so appealing in the first place.
