Domaine Jean Foillard is one of the absolute benchmark names in Beaujolais and one of those producers that wine nerds start talking about with slightly concerning levels of emotional intensity after two glasses. Based in Morgon, Foillard helped redefine what Gamay could be, moving the region away from the bubblegum chaos of cheap Beaujolais Nouveau and back toward wines with depth, texture, minerality and genuine ageing potential.

The domaine is best known for wines from Côte du Py, one of Morgon’s most famous volcanic hillside sites, where old Gamay vines produce wines with incredible concentration and finesse. Foillard’s wines somehow manage to feel both delicate and powerful at the same time. Bright cherry, raspberry, violets, spice, earth and smoky mineral notes all show up, but nothing feels forced or over-extracted. There’s a softness and purity to the wines that makes them dangerously easy to drink despite the serious complexity underneath.

Jean Foillard became closely associated with the natural wine movement long before it became trendy enough for every wine bar to start serving slightly unstable orange wine in tiny glasses. Inspired by Jules Chauvet and working alongside legends like Marcel Lapierre, Foillard focused on low-intervention winemaking, native yeasts and minimal sulphur while still keeping precision and balance front and centre. The result is wines that feel alive and expressive rather than funky for the sake of it.

What really makes Foillard special is how effortlessly elegant the wines are. Even the more structured cuvées never feel heavy or overly serious. They still have that joyful, energetic Beaujolais drinkability underneath all the complexity. Proper cellar-worthy wines that also disappear alarmingly fast at the dinner table.
