A classic Flemish red-brown ale from Brouwerij Verhaeghe in Belgium, known for its distinctive balance of sweet, sour and oak-aged complexity. It’s a blend of younger and older beer that is matured in large oak foeders for up to 18 months, developing its signature depth and vinous character.

On the nose and palate, expect sour cherry, red plum and balsamic vinegar, layered with caramel, brown sugar and soft oak tannins. There’s a clear wine-like edge, often described as the most “burgundian” of Belgian beers, with a gentle acidity running through the structure.

Belgium has preserved brewing traditions that many countries lost generations ago. Verhaeghe remains one of the breweries keeping some of those traditions very much alive.

Founded in West Flanders in the nineteenth century, the family-owned brewery became especially associated with Flemish red-brown ales, a style that combines mixed fermentation, oak ageing and remarkable depth of flavour. These are beers that often behave more like wine than many people expect from beer.

Duchesse de Bourgogne remains the brewery’s most famous release. A blend of younger and oak-aged beer, it delivers sour cherry, balsamic notes, dark fruit, caramel and gentle acidity with an elegance that explains why so many brewers quietly admire it.

What makes Verhaeghe particularly interesting is its patience. Long maturation in oak vats remains central to the process, allowing the beer to develop complexity that cannot really be rushed.

Belgian beer history is full of famous names. Verhaeghe deserves to be much higher on more people's lists.
