More About Frangelico Liqueur

From the Piedmont region of northern Italy, this liqueur is made from wild hazelnuts and other herbs and spices. The aroma and flavour are deliciously nutty with toasted characteristics plus hints of vanilla and cocoa.

Meet the Producer, Frangelico

Frangelico

Style: Liqueurs

Frangelico is one of the world’s most famous hazelnut liqueurs and honestly tastes pretty much exactly like liquid Nutella for grown-ups, which explains why people keep coming back to it. Originally created in Italy’s Piedmont region, the liqueur combines toasted hazelnuts with cocoa, vanilla and a mix of herbs and spices to create something ridiculously smooth, sweet and easy to drink.

The bottle itself is hard to miss too, shaped a bit like a monk’s robe with a rope belt around the waist. According to the story, the recipe was inspired by local monks who supposedly made hazelnut liqueurs in the region centuries ago. Whether every detail of that story is completely true or not, the important part is that the drink tastes great.

Hazelnuts are a huge part of Piedmont’s food culture, and the nuts used for Frangelico are one of the reasons the liqueur tastes far richer and more genuine than a lot of cheaper nut-flavoured spirits. There’s proper roasted nut character underneath the sweetness, along with chocolate, coffee and vanilla notes that make it work brilliantly in cocktails, coffee or just poured over ice.

A lot of people first encounter Frangelico in espresso martinis, dessert cocktails or questionable student-era shots involving cream liqueur, but it’s actually far more versatile than its party reputation sometimes suggests. It works surprisingly well in proper cocktails and can even pair brilliantly with whisky or dark rum.

At the end of the day though, Frangelico’s main strength is simply being very enjoyable. Sweet, nutty, comforting and slightly nostalgic in a way that makes one small glass very easily become several.
