More About Isle of Raasay Single Malt Scotch Whisky, The Draam, 46.4%

A lightly peated single malt from the Isle of Raasay, The Draam is built around a clever six-cask recipe, combining peated and unpeated spirit matured separately in first-fill American rye whiskey, virgin Chinkapin oak and Bordeaux red wine casks. The result is a whisky with fragrant smoke, plenty of dark fruit and a good bit of spice, bottled at 46.4%, naturally coloured and non-chill filtered.

The smoke is relatively gentle, leaving plenty of room for cherry, blackberry and apricot, with vanilla, honeycomb and butterscotch adding richness. There's black pepper and cinnamon spice through the palate, followed by a touch of coastal salt and a fresh, slightly menthol finish. A really nicely balanced introduction to what Raasay is all about.

Meet the Producer, Isle of Raasay

Isle of Raasay

Style: Distillery

The Isle of Raasay Distillery arrived on a tiny Hebridean island with fewer people than some London apartment blocks and immediately decided it was going to make whisky very seriously. Good decision really, because the distillery has become one of the most exciting newer names in Scotch without relying on endless “future cask investment opportunity” nonsense to stay relevant.

Everything gets distilled, matured and bottled right there on the island, which gives the whole operation a proper sense of place. The whisky style mixes peated and unpeated spirit together with an unusual six-cask maturation setup involving rye whiskey, virgin oak and Bordeaux wine casks. Sounds chaotic on paper. Tastes brilliant in the glass.

The result is whisky with smoke, dark fruit, spice and this lovely salty island character running underneath it all. Modern and slightly experimental without losing the feeling that it’s still recognisably Scotch whisky rather than somebody trying to reinvent the wheel after three espresso martinis.

Their gin deserves a mention too. Bright, crisp and packed with botanicals including local Raasay juniper and citrus peel, all kept very clean and fresh.

Part of the charm is how remote the whole thing feels. Ferry ride, tiny island, distillery attached to old buildings staring out across the sea toward Skye. You can absolutely see why whisky tourists get emotionally attached to the place after one visit.

And somehow despite being relatively young, they’re already picking up major awards and cult status among whisky nerds. Not bad going for a distillery surrounded mostly by sheep and weather.
