More About Olivier Rivière Rioja VDE “Trotamundos Pie Franco” (Red) 2017
From old ungrafted vines planted in 1892, Olivier Rivière’s “Trotamundos Pie Franco” 2017 is a strikingly soulful expression of Spanish Tempranillo, powerful, wild, and deeply elegant all at once.
Sourced from sandy soils and made with minimal intervention, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts before ageing for 12 months in old oak barrels, allowing the vineyard character to speak with remarkable clarity.
The nose is intensely aromatic, opening with dark cherry, blackberry, liquorice, cocoa, and warm spice, alongside earthy notes, dried herbs, and a subtle savoury edge. On the palate, it’s concentrated yet beautifully lifted, combining ripe black fruit with fine tannins, fresh acidity, and a mineral depth that keeps the wine poised despite its richness.
There’s a distinctly old-vine character here, textured, layered, and quietly profound, with the warmth and intensity of Toro balanced by surprising finesse and energy. The finish is long, spicy, and deeply expressive.
A serious, characterful red that rewards slow drinking and pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, game, or richly savoury dishes. One of Olivier Rivière’s most compelling wines, showing both the raw power and elegance possible from ancient Tempranillo vines.
