Collection: Tempranillo

Tempranillo ripens earlier than most red grapes, which is where its name comes from. It's the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero, producing wines that can be enjoyed young or left to develop for decades.

Tempranillo is Spain’s most important and widely recognised red grape variety, forming the backbone of many of the country’s most celebrated wines. Best known through regions such as Rioja and Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo produces wines that balance ripe fruit, savoury spice, freshness and structure, with styles ranging from vibrant everyday reds to complex and long-lived cellar-worthy bottles.

The grape adapts strongly to climate and winemaking style. In cooler and higher-altitude regions, Tempranillo often shows fresher acidity and red fruit character, while warmer areas produce deeper and fuller-bodied wines with darker fruit, softer tannin and greater concentration. Oak ageing also plays a major role in many traditional Spanish wines, adding notes of vanilla, cedar, tobacco and spice alongside Tempranillo’s natural savoury character.

Our Tempranillo range focuses on expressive growers producing wines with balance, freshness and regional identity, from traditional Rioja and Ribera del Duero to fresher low-intervention bottlings and modern Spanish reds. Alongside established producers, the collection also includes organically farmed and minimal intervention wines chosen for drinkability, texture and purity of fruit.

Expect flavours of cherry, plum, blackberry, dried herbs, tobacco and spice alongside wines that pair naturally with grilled meat, tapas, roast vegetables and aged cheese. Whether you prefer younger fruit-forward Tempranillo or more mature oak-aged styles with savoury complexity, Tempranillo remains one of the most versatile and food-friendly red grape varieties in the wine world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Tempranillo taste like?

Tempranillo typically shows flavours of cherry, plum, blackberry, dried herbs, tobacco, leather and spice, often with subtle oak influence in aged styles.

Is Tempranillo full bodied?

Tempranillo is usually medium to full bodied with moderate tannins and balanced acidity, depending on region and winemaking style.

Is Rioja made from Tempranillo?

Yes. Tempranillo is the dominant grape variety in most Rioja wines and forms the backbone of many traditional and modern Rioja blends.

What food pairs well with Tempranillo?

Tempranillo pairs especially well with grilled meat, lamb, tapas, roast vegetables, cured meats and hard cheeses thanks to its savoury structure and acidity.

Does Tempranillo age well?

Yes. High-quality Tempranillo, particularly from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, can age exceptionally well and develop greater complexity over time.
