S.C. Pannell Nebbiolo is an Australian red wine crafted by winemaker Stephen Pannell, who brings a deep appreciation for the Nebbiolo grape from his experiences in Italy's Piedmont region. Sourced from biodynamic vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, particularly the Protero Vineyard in Gumeracha, this wine reflects Pannell's commitment to expressing the grape's character with minimal intervention.

The wine exhibits a pale to medium ruby hue, characteristic of Nebbiolo. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of red cherry, rosewater, fennel bulb, cassis, chestnut purée, marjoram, terracotta tiles, and cedar . The palate is medium-bodied, presenting ripe cherry notes, dried violet, and a touch of leather. Firm, chewy tannins and lively acidity provide structure, leading to a dry finish with an elegant, medium-length aftertaste .

Pannell's approach involves extended maceration on skins and aging in old oak puncheons, techniques that enhance the wine's texture and complexity . The result is a Nebbiolo that balances ripe fruit flavors with savory elements, offering a genuine expression of the variety outside its traditional Italian context.

This wine pairs well with dishes such as game meats, mature cheeses, and hearty pasta, and it has the potential to age gracefully over several years.

S.C.Pannell

Style: Winery

Country: Australia

Region: McLaren Vale, South Australia

Australian wine has changed enormously over the last twenty years. The huge, heavily oaked fruit bombs still exist of course, usually lurking somewhere near a barbecue, but producers like S.C.Pannell Winery helped push the country towards fresher, more site-driven and far more interesting styles.

Founded by Stephen Pannell and Fiona Lindquist in McLaren Vale, the winery focuses heavily on expressing vineyard character rather than forcing every grape into the same rich Australian template. Grenache, Tempranillo, Nero d’Avola and Chenin Blanc all feature prominently alongside Shiraz, reflecting both Mediterranean influence and the warm coastal conditions of South Australia.

What makes the wines stand out is their energy. Even the richer reds tend to carry brightness, savoury spice and proper structure rather than simple weight. Grenache performs particularly well here, producing wines full of raspberry, dried herbs and fine tannins that feel far more southern Rhône than stereotypical blockbuster Australia.

Stephen Pannell’s background working internationally shows in the winemaking too. Oak tends to stay controlled, alcohol balanced and texture carefully judged. The wines feel confident without becoming overworked, which is often harder than making something loudly impressive.

McLaren Vale itself has become one of Australia’s most exciting wine regions precisely because of this shift in philosophy. There’s still sunshine and generosity, obviously, but also increasing focus on old vines, Mediterranean varieties and vineyard expression. S.C.Pannell sits right in the middle of that movement, making wines that feel distinctly Australian while avoiding nearly every lazy stereotype attached to Australian wine.
