St Germain Elderflower Liquer

Few liqueurs have managed to become quite so unavoidable in modern cocktail culture quite so quickly. Saint-Germain arrived, wrapped itself in elegant Belle Époque branding and somehow ended up behind bars almost everywhere.

Made from fresh elderflowers gathered in France, the liqueur balances floral aromatics with citrus, pear and stone fruit notes rather than drifting into perfume-like sweetness. The result feels delicate but surprisingly versatile.

The elderflower character is immediately recognisable. Bright, fragrant and slightly honeyed, but with enough freshness underneath to stop things becoming cloying. Mixed with sparkling wine it becomes dangerously easy to drink. Mixed into gin cocktails it somehow manages to make everything feel slightly more summery.

Part of its success comes from the fact it fills a very useful gap. Distinctive enough to change a drink completely, but subtle enough not to dominate everything around it.

Modern cocktail culture adopted Saint-Germain so enthusiastically that it almost feels like it has always existed. In reality, it is a relatively recent arrival that simply found its place remarkably quickly.
