Unicum is one of Hungary’s most iconic spirits, a deeply herbal, bittersweet liqueur produced by the Zwack family to a closely guarded recipe dating back to 1790. Hungary has produced one of Europe’s most distinctive herbal liqueurs for well over two centuries, and Unicum still tastes like absolutely nothing else.

According to family history, the drink was first created in 1790 by Dr. Zwack for the court of Emperor Joseph II. Since then the recipe has remained a closely guarded secret, passing through generations of the Zwack family while becoming one of Hungary’s most recognisable national drinks.

Made from more than forty herbs and spices, Unicum sits somewhere between amaro, digestif and medicinal potion. Bitter citrus, herbs, spice, roots and deep earthy notes all appear throughout the flavour profile. It is not especially interested in being easy to drink, which is arguably part of the point.

The spirit is matured in oak casks, helping soften and integrate the herbal intensity while still preserving its unmistakable bitterness. It remains a staple of Hungarian drinking culture, often consumed after meals or during lengthy social gatherings.

Many herbal liqueurs aim for complexity. Unicum aims for character, and it has more than enough of that already.
