More About Unicum Bitter Liqueur 50cl

Unicum is one of Hungary’s most iconic spirits, a deeply herbal, bittersweet liqueur produced by the Zwack family to a closely guarded recipe dating back to 1790. Crafted using more than 40 herbs and spices, with part of the blend distilled and part macerated before ageing in oak casks, Unicum delivers an intensely complex profile unlike almost anything else.

Rich, dark and unmistakably bitter, Unicum is Hungary’s legendary herbal liqueur, produced from a secret recipe of more than 40 herbs and spices and matured in oak casks for added depth. Expect bold notes of medicinal herbs, warming spice, citrus peel, coffee, eucalyptus and earthy bitterness balanced by subtle sweetness. Intensely aromatic and wonderfully complex, Unicum is traditionally enjoyed chilled as a digestif after meals, though its distinctive profile also works beautifully in modern cocktails and amaro-inspired serves. A true cult classic for lovers of Fernet, amaro and herbal bitters.

Meet the Producer, Unicum

Unicum

Style: Liqueurs

Hungary has produced one of Europe’s most distinctive herbal liqueurs for well over two centuries, and Unicum still tastes like absolutely nothing else.

According to family history, the drink was first created in 1790 by Dr. Zwack for the court of Emperor Joseph II. Since then the recipe has remained a closely guarded secret, passing through generations of the Zwack family while becoming one of Hungary’s most recognisable national drinks.

Made from more than forty herbs and spices, Unicum sits somewhere between amaro, digestif and medicinal potion. Bitter citrus, herbs, spice, roots and deep earthy notes all appear throughout the flavour profile. It is not especially interested in being easy to drink, which is arguably part of the point.

The spirit is matured in oak casks, helping soften and integrate the herbal intensity while still preserving its unmistakable bitterness. It remains a staple of Hungarian drinking culture, often consumed after meals or during lengthy social gatherings.

Many herbal liqueurs aim for complexity. Unicum aims for character, and it has more than enough of that already.
