Brewed by Hollywood's Alan Cumming in collaboration with Wasted Degrees and Pitlochry Festival Theatre to celebrate the Theatre's 75th Anniversary and Alan's first programmed season as Artistic Director! This beer is malty, fruity and floral, a celebration in a glass!

 

Alan, known for his roles in Avengers, The Traitors, X-Men and James Bond 007 film GoldenEye, was born in the nearby town of Aberfeldy, a place close to the hearts of Jack and Conall too as it's where they went to school!

 

We first explored recipes with Alan and the Theatre team back in Summer 2025. Alan joined us to brew the beer in December 2025, our most high-profile apprentice brewer! The beer launched in January 2026 at the Theatre's 'Out in the Hills' festival - a celebration of all things LGBTQIA+.

Wasted Degrees

Wasted Degrees might have started in a garage, but it has grown into one of the more interesting independent breweries in Scotland without losing the slightly DIY energy that made people pay attention in the first place.

Founded by brothers Conall and Jack Low, the brewery began commercial brewing in 2016 before moving to its current home in Blair Atholl in 2019. Set within the Cairngorms area, the brewery combines modern craft brewing with a noticeable focus on sustainability, local sourcing and doing things slightly differently. The team even describe parts of the brewhouse as a bit of a "Frankenstein's Brewery", thanks to a mix of repurposed and carefully sourced equipment.

The beers cover a broad range of styles. Hop-forward IPAs, lagers, stouts, mixed fermentation projects and seasonal releases all appear regularly. There is a strong emphasis on freshness and drinkability throughout the range, whether it is a crisp Helles lager, a resinous West Coast IPA or something considerably stranger. Supporting British-grown ingredients and reducing waste also play a major role in how the brewery operates.

The Blair Atholl site has become a destination in its own right. Alongside brewery tours and tastings, the taproom serves fresh beer, cider and pizzas, creating the sort of place where a quick visit can quietly turn into an entire afternoon. Which, to be fair, is often a sign the brewery has got things right.

What makes Wasted Degrees particularly appealing is that it still feels closely tied to where it comes from. Perthshire, local agriculture and the surrounding landscape all remain part of the story rather than simply appearing in marketing copy.

Scottish brewing has produced a lot of strong independent breweries over the last decade. Wasted Degrees has comfortably earned its place among them.
