Style: Brewery

Scottish brewing has a habit of looking both forwards and backwards at the same time. Williams Brothers built an entire brewery around that idea.

Founded by brothers Bruce and Scott Williams, the brewery first gained attention through Fraoch, a heather ale inspired by ancient Scottish brewing traditions. What started as an experiment with historical recipes gradually grew into one of Scotland’s most recognisable independent breweries.

Based in Alloa, a town with deep brewing roots of its own, Williams Brothers became known for blending traditional influences with modern craft brewing. Alongside historic styles like Fraoch, Ebulum and Alba, the brewery produces pale ales, IPAs, lagers and seasonal releases that feel far more contemporary.

Part of the appeal is that the brewery never became trapped by nostalgia. The historic beers remain important, but there is always a sense of curiosity running through the range. Heather, spruce, gooseberries and other unusual ingredients have appeared over the years without the whole thing turning into a medieval re-enactment society.

Scotland has produced plenty of excellent modern breweries. Williams Brothers remains one of the few that managed to make the country’s brewing history feel genuinely relevant rather than simply decorative.
