Fish and chips is a meal that hardly needs an introduction, but the right drink can take it from great to even better. Crispy batter, flaky fish and chunky chips call for something fresh enough to cut through the richness without overpowering the delicate flavour of the fish.

A crisp lager is the obvious classic, but dry sparkling wines, zippy whites and refreshing pale ales all work brilliantly too. Bright acidity and lively carbonation help cleanse the palate between bites, especially if you've added a squeeze of lemon, plenty of salt and vinegar, or a generous dollop of tartare sauce.
