BLF2-R, Hrašćina, Croatia

Cabernet Sauvignon

A stunning dark crimson hue, hinting at slight ageing with a lighter rim. This Cabernet Sauvignon boasts intensity with prominent notes of red cherry, blackberry, and a hint of cinnamon on the finish.

This Cabernet presents a weightier profile, yet maintains a relatively low alcohol content of 13.5%. Soft, elegant tannins contribute to its well-rounded character. With a beautiful length, it's a strong contender for our top pick. Fermented on the lees and non-filtered, natural sediment may be present, promising further improvement with age.

Bolfan G

Style: Winery

Country: Croatia

Region: Hrvatsko Zagorje

Bolfan G is one of Croatia’s most exciting organic wineries and a brilliant example of just how much quietly excellent wine is hiding across Central and Eastern Europe while the rest of the wine world gets distracted arguing about Burgundy prices. Based in the green rolling hills of Hrvatsko Zagorje in northern Croatia, the winery focuses heavily on organic and biodynamic farming, producing elegant cool-climate wines that feel fresh, expressive and wonderfully food-friendly.

The region itself sits much closer stylistically to Central Europe than the sunny Dalmatian coast many people associate with Croatian wine. White varieties dominate here, particularly Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and the local Škrlet grape, all benefiting from cooler temperatures and mineral-rich soils that help preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. The wines often show lovely orchard fruit, citrus, herbs and floral character with a freshness that makes them dangerously easy to drink.

What makes Bolfan G especially interesting is how naturally the winery combines sustainability with serious winemaking ambition. These aren’t “healthy wines” trying to compensate for lack of flavour with eco-marketing. There’s real precision and vineyard character running through the range alongside a slightly wild natural edge that keeps things lively without tipping into funky chaos territory.

Croatian wine still feels wildly underrated internationally, which honestly works quite nicely for anyone who enjoys discovering brilliant bottles before they become painfully fashionable. Bolfan G captures that perfectly: distinctive, characterful wines with loads of personality and absolutely none of the boring predictability that comes from playing it safe.
