Cruse Wine Co.’s Alder Springs Tannat is sourced from the high‑elevation Alder Springs Vineyard in Mendocino County, planted at around 2,300 ft on a steep south-facing slope of decomposed sandstone, an approach that encourages even ripening of the intense, tannic Tannat variety.

The vineyard employs sustainable viticulture with a clear movement toward organic and even biodynamic certification. All work is performed by hand, including pruning and canopy management, and yields are deliberately kept low to concentrate flavor. Soil health is maintained with these low-intervention practices, and no synthetic chemicals are used.

In the cellar, the fruit is destemmed and fermented spontaneously (with native yeasts) in concrete vats. The wine undergoes gentle extraction through punch-downs and pump-overs for around 12 days, followed by malolactic conversion in used barriques. It’s then racked once before bottling and receives minimal added sulfur, just enough to stabilize, with no fining or filtration.

Together, these farming and winemaking choices contribute to a Tannat that’s textural, expressive, and authentic to both its variety and its high‑altitude Mendocino origin.

Cruse Wine Co.

Style: Winery

Country: United States

Region: California

Cruse Wine Co. feels like California wine after somebody opened all the windows and let fresh air back into the room. Founded by Michael Cruse in Petaluma, the winery became one of the most exciting names in modern Californian wine by focusing on freshness, balance and lesser-known grape varieties instead of simply making another gigantic Cabernet designed to emotionally intimidate steak.

Michael Cruse first became famous through Ultramarine, his cult California sparkling project, but Cruse Wine Co. gave him freedom to explore much broader territory. Valdiguié, Tannat, Carignan, St Laurent and other wonderfully unfashionable grapes all appear regularly, producing wines that feel vibrant, juicy and unapologetically Californian without becoming overripe caricatures.

The sparkling wines especially are brilliant. Pet-nats, traditional method bottlings and playful sparkling reds all show up with loads of energy and freshness. California sunshine translated into fizz, basically. The still wines meanwhile lean bright and fruit-driven with surprisingly low alcohol and loads of drinkability compared to the heavyweight Napa stereotype many people still picture automatically.

What makes Cruse especially refreshing is the sense of curiosity running through everything. These wines feel exploratory and alive rather than carefully engineered luxury products built for investment portfolios and aggressive tasting notes.

There’s also something very appealing about a Californian winery openly prioritising balance and joy over sheer power. The wines actually make you want another glass instead of a quiet lie down afterwards.

A surprisingly underrated quality in warm-climate winemaking sometimes.
