Rosa Kruger, acknowledged as 'the queen of the Cape's old vines' by Tim Atkin MW, has played a pivotal role in discovering and preserving many of the Cape's esteemed vineyards. Collaborating with Fairview in Paarl and Gabriëlskloof in Walker Bay, Rosa resides in Riebeek-Kasteel in Swartland, making her a neighbor of Chris and Andrea. When Chris and Andrea expressed their interest in working with old-vine fruit, Rosa guided them towards two of South Africa's oldest registered red wine vineyards, featuring dry farmed Cinsault bush vines.

The 'Basson' vineyard, planted in 1900 near Wellington on deep sandy alluvial soils, and the 'Lötter' vineyard, planted in 1932 on the lower eastern slopes of the Franschhoek mountains, became the focal points of their venture. Chris expressed the desire to tap into the heritage of the great Cape wines of the 1950s and 1960s, aiming to retain their best characteristics while employing a modern, non-interventionist winemaking approach.

Both the Wellington Old Vines Basson Cinsault and Franschhoek Old Vines Lötter Cinsault undergo 100% whole bunch fermentation, resulting in wines with lifted aromas and tannins that gracefully carry the fruit through the palate. Chris describes these wines as nothing short of masterpieces, embodying a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary winemaking techniques.

Mullineux

Style: Winery

Country: South Africa

Region: Swartland

South Africa’s wine scene became dramatically more exciting once producers stopped trying to imitate Bordeaux and started trusting their own vineyards instead. Mullineux were right at the centre of that shift.

Founded by Chris and Andrea Mullineux in Swartland in 2007, the winery quickly became one of the defining names of modern South African wine. Old dry-farmed vineyards, granite and schist soils, low-intervention winemaking and a huge focus on site expression all sit at the core of the project.

Syrah and Chenin Blanc are the real stars here. The Syrahs carry black olive, pepper, dark fruit and savoury spice with freshness and structure that feels much more Rhône than blockbuster New World red. The whites can be extraordinary too. Chenin Blanc with waxy texture, citrus, herbs and mineral tension that keeps unfolding over time rather than shouting immediately.

Swartland itself plays a huge role in the style. Dry climate, ancient soils and old bush vines naturally produce concentrated fruit, but cooler evenings preserve freshness underneath. The wines somehow feel both generous and restrained at the same time.

What makes Mullineux particularly impressive is consistency. Even the more serious single-soil wines retain drinkability and energy rather than disappearing into collector territory. These are wines that reward attention, but also disappear surprisingly quickly once opened.
