Logodaj Winery, established in 1994 in Bulgaria's sun-drenched Struma Valley, specializes in the unique Melnik 55 wine. This local grape variety, developed by the communist government in 1955, thrives in one of the hottest regions bordering Greece and North Macedonia. The wine undergoes pre-cold maceration to preserve freshness, followed by fermentation and aging in French and Slavonian oak barrels for 12 months. Melnik 55 features an intense ruby color with violet reflections and offers a harmonious blend of black cherry, forest fruit, tobacco, and red pepper notes. Perfectly balanced, this medium to full-bodied red pairs beautifully with slow-roasted meats, stews, or blue cheeses.

Bulgarian wine remains one of Europe’s great underappreciated bargains. Plenty of sunshine, ancient winemaking history, fascinating local grapes and prices that haven’t yet completely lost their minds. Logodaj are one of the producers showing just how good the country can be.

The winery sits in the Struma Valley of southwestern Bulgaria, close to Melnik near the Greek border. It’s one of the hottest and sunniest wine regions in the country, producing rich, expressive reds while still holding onto freshness thanks to cooler mountain influence nearby.

Local grapes play a huge role here, especially Melnik varieties that barely exist outside this corner of the world. Broad-Leaved Melnik and Melnik 55 bring dark fruit, spice, dried herbs and a slightly earthy savoury character that feels distinctly Balkan rather than international. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah also appear throughout the range, but the native varieties are usually where things get most interesting.

There’s a warmth and generosity to these wines that suits the region beautifully. Ripe blackberry fruit, tobacco, pepper and Mediterranean herbs all tend to show up somewhere, often with softer tannins than people expect. They work brilliantly with grilled meat, roasted vegetables and basically anything involving paprika or smoke.

The broader Bulgarian wine scene has improved enormously over the last twenty years as well. Better vineyard management, modern cellars and renewed confidence in indigenous grapes have transformed the country’s reputation. Logodaj sits right in the middle of that movement. Traditional roots, modern winemaking and bottles that massively outperform what people expect for the price.
