Paul Clouet Bouzy Rouge is a Grand Cru Côteaux Champenois still red wine made from 100 % Pinot Noir grown on south-facing, chalky mid-slope vineyards in Bouzy, specifically the lieu-dits Les Clos and Les Hautes BroussesAfter stainless-steel fermentation to preserve purity of fruit, it’s aged approximately 24 months in oak barrels before bottling.

On the nose, it displays pale ruby hues with vibrant aromas of red fruits, raspberry and sour cherry, accented by floral hints of rose and violet. The palate is fresh and savory, with silky tannins, lingering fruit persistence, and underlying minerality that balances richnessThe 2018 vintage earned two stars in the Hachette Guide, described as “gourmand, harmonieux et persistant,” with intense, spicy raspberry flavors and notable aging potential into the mid-2020s.

Production is limited, around 2 500 bottles in 2018, from the relatively small family estate (approximately 6ha total across Bouzy and Chouilly).

Paul Clouet

Style: Winery

Country: France

Region: Champagne, Bouzy

Grower Champagne often feels more personal than the larger houses. Smaller vineyard holdings, family production and wines that reflect specific villages rather than broad brand consistency. Paul Clouet sits comfortably within that world.

Based in Bouzy in the Montagne de Reims, the house works primarily with Pinot Noir grown in one of Champagne’s most respected Grand Cru villages. Bouzy is famous for producing richer, broader Pinot Noir with plenty of structure, which gives the wines a slightly deeper style than some of the sharper Côte des Blancs expressions.

The Champagnes tend to balance ripe orchard fruit, citrus and brioche notes with a chalky mineral backbone and fine mousse. There is richness, but also freshness. The non-vintage bottlings make excellent drinking while the vintage wines and rosé carry a bit more depth and savoury character.

What makes smaller grower producers interesting is that vineyard identity remains front and centre. The wines often feel less polished in the corporate sense, but more expressive and individual as a result. Paul Clouet captures that balance nicely. Traditional Champagne technique, certainly, but with enough personality left intact.

Bouzy itself has long been associated with Pinot Noir of real power and ageing potential, and that influence comes through clearly here. These are Champagnes that work beautifully with food rather than existing purely as aperitif material.
