Pursued by Bear “Bear Cub” is a bold yet approachable Washington State red blend created by actor and wine producer Kyle MacLachlan in collaboration with acclaimed winemaker Daniel Wampfler. Produced in Washington’s Columbia Valley, Bear Cub has earned a strong reputation for delivering rich Cabernet-driven character with exceptional balance and drinkability.

Named as the playful sibling to the flagship Pursued by Bear Cabernet Sauvignon, Bear Cub combines Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller proportions of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc depending on vintage. The wine is matured in French oak barrels, adding depth, spice and texture while maintaining vibrant fruit character.

On the nose, expect aromas of blackcurrant, ripe blackberry, dark cherry and vanilla spice layered with cocoa, cedar and subtle toasted oak. The palate is rich and smooth with flavours of cassis, plum, mocha and dark chocolate balanced by silky tannins and fresh acidity.

Unlike many overly heavy New World reds, Bear Cub retains freshness and balance alongside its ripe fruit and generous texture. It works equally well as a standalone sipping wine or paired with grilled steak, barbecue dishes, burgers, roast meats and mature cheeses.

At around 14–14.5% ABV depending on vintage, Bear Cub delivers bold Washington State fruit with polish, structure and impressive drinkability.

Celebrity wine projects usually trigger a certain level of suspicion. Quite often the famous name arrives first and the wine appears somewhere much later. Pursued by Bear avoids that problem largely because the wines have been taken seriously from the beginning.

The project was founded by actor Kyle MacLachlan, whose love of wine led him towards Washington State rather than the more obvious Californian route. Working alongside respected winemaker Daniel Wampfler, the winery focuses on Bordeaux-inspired blends and Syrah sourced from some of Washington’s strongest vineyard sites.

The reds lean rich and structured without becoming overblown. Cabernet Sauvignon plays a major role, bringing blackcurrant, dark cherry and cedar notes, while Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties add texture and depth. The Syrah often shows a slightly savoury edge alongside the fruit, reflecting Washington’s cooler nights and longer growing season.

What makes the wines interesting is that they genuinely reflect the region. Washington State has become one of America’s most exciting wine areas thanks to its combination of warm sunshine, cool evenings and dry growing conditions. The resulting wines often carry concentration alongside freshness in a way that feels very distinct from California.
