Mead spent years being treated as something halfway between historical curiosity and fantasy convention prop. Superstition Meadery helped drag it firmly back into the modern drinks world.

Founded in Arizona, the meadery built a reputation around pushing the category far beyond the usual expectations. Honey remains the foundation, but the range regularly incorporates fruit, spices, coffee, cacao and barrel ageing in ways that feel ambitious without becoming gimmicky.

The resulting meads often carry remarkable intensity. Rich berry fruit, floral honey character, acidity and texture all appear throughout the range, creating drinks that frequently sit closer to wine than many people expect. Some bottlings age beautifully, developing layers of complexity over time.

What makes Superstition particularly interesting is that it helped broaden perceptions of what mead could be. Modern craft brewing borrowed ideas from wine and spirits. Superstition did something similar with honey.

Arizona may not be the first place people imagine when discussing mead, but the meadery has become one of the category’s most influential modern names regardless.
