Weingut Karthäuserhof

Style: Winery

Country: Germany

Region: Ruwer, Mosel

Some wineries have history. Karthäuserhof has been making wine since 1335, which starts to make most family businesses look relatively new.

Hidden in the Ruwer Valley near Trier, the estate originated with Carthusian monks before passing into private ownership after secularisation. For centuries the winery focused almost entirely on a single vineyard, Karthäuserhofberg, one of the great historic sites of the Mosel region.

Riesling dominates the vineyards, planted on iron-rich slate soils that help create wines with remarkable precision and longevity. The style leans towards citrus, stone fruit, floral notes and deep mineral character, often developing extraordinary complexity with age. The Ruwer Valley's cooler conditions help preserve acidity and elegance even in warmer vintages.

What makes Karthäuserhof particularly fascinating is its consistency. Across centuries of changing fashions, the focus has remained firmly on Riesling and vineyard expression rather than trends.

The Mosel produces many famous wines. Karthäuserhof remains one of the estates that helps explain why people become obsessed with Riesling in the first place.
