Collection: Grenache Noir

Grenache Noir loves sunshine. It thrives in warm, dry vineyards, producing generous reds with ripe berry fruit, gentle spice and soft, rounded tannins. Bottled on its own or blended with Syrah and Mourvèdre, it's a grape that brings warmth, generosity and plenty of charm to the glass.

Grenache Noir has long been one of the defining grapes of the Mediterranean, yet it's often overshadowed by the famous regions and blends it's part of. It's the backbone of a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, a juicy Côtes du Rhône and a sun-soaked red from Spain. Grenache has an unmistakable ability to produce wines that are generous, expressive and incredibly drinkable. Originally from Aragón in Spain, it now thrives across southern France and many of the world's warm wine regions.

At its best, Grenache Noir combines ripe raspberry, cherry and plum fruit with notes of white pepper, dried herbs and gentle spice. It naturally produces softer tannins and moderate acidity, giving the wines a rounded, approachable feel without sacrificing character. While some examples are rich and powerful, particularly from old vines, others lean towards elegance and freshness, making Grenache one of the most versatile red grapes around.

Although it's famous for its role in blends alongside Syrah and Mourvèdre, more and more growers are bottling Grenache on its own. Old-vine vineyards, careful farming and a lighter touch in the winery have shown just how much finesse this grape can offer.

Grenache Noir is wonderfully easy to enjoy with food. Its soft tannins and ripe fruit make it a natural partner for roast lamb, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, tomato-based dishes and anything coming off the barbecue. If you enjoy Pinot Noir but fancy something with a little more warmth, or you're looking for a fuller-bodied alternative to Gamay without losing freshness, Grenache is a grape well worth getting to know.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Grenache Noir?

Grenache Noir is a red grape variety originally from Spain, where it's known as Garnacha. Today it's one of the most important grapes in southern France, particularly in the Rhône Valley and Languedoc, producing generous, fruit-driven wines with plenty of warmth and character.

What does Grenache Noir taste like?

Grenache Noir is known for flavours of ripe cherry, raspberry and plum, often accompanied by white pepper, dried herbs and gentle spice. The wines tend to have soft tannins, medium acidity and a rounded, approachable style that's easy to enjoy.

Is Grenache Noir usually blended?

Yes. Grenache is most famous as part of blends with Syrah and Mourvèdre, particularly in the southern Rhône. However, more producers are bottling Grenache on its own, showing just how elegant and expressive the grape can be.

What food pairs well with Grenache Noir?

Grenache Noir is brilliant with roast lamb, grilled vegetables, charcuterie, tomato-based dishes and barbecue. Its ripe fruit and soft tannins also make it an excellent match for Mediterranean cooking and dishes with herbs and spices.

Where is Grenache Noir grown?

Although it originated in Spain, Grenache Noir is now widely grown across southern France, particularly in the Rhône Valley, Languedoc and Roussillon. You'll also find excellent examples from Australia, California and South Africa, where warm climates help the grape thrive.

Is Grenache Noir a full-bodied wine?

Grenache Noir usually sits between medium and full-bodied, depending on where it's grown and how it's made. It offers plenty of ripe fruit and richness without the firm tannins of varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon or Nebbiolo, making it an approachable choice for many red wine drinkers.
