Chardonnay is one of the world’s most important and versatile white grape varieties, capable of producing an enormous range of wine styles depending on climate, soil and winemaking approach. Originally from Burgundy in eastern France, Chardonnay is now grown across nearly every major wine-producing country, from cool-climate coastal vineyards and Alpine regions to warmer Mediterranean and New World sites.

The grape is especially valued for its ability to reflect terroir and winemaking style. In cooler regions such as Chablis, Chardonnay tends to produce crisp, mineral-driven wines with citrus, green apple and saline freshness, while warmer climates can create broader, richer wines with stone fruit, texture and riper fruit character. Oak ageing and lees contact can also add notes of brioche, vanilla, butter and spice, though many modern producers now favour fresher and more restrained styles.
